Q & A

I get many questions about life at the racetrack, what happens to the horses after the track, and everything in between. So I thought I’d start a little Q&A on the blog to help clarify what I can.

Question: How do I choose an animal organization to support? How can I tell if a nonprofit is being run ethically, and fits with my charitable giving philosophy?

Answer: Ask yourself the following 3 questions:

1. Is the organization a 501(C)(3)? This designation means your donations are tax deductible as allowed by law, and the organization’s tax returns are viewable at <http://www2.guidestar.org/> The nonprofit’s tax form 990 will show how much money was raised, and how it was spent.  It takes 6-12 months to get the IRS designation, and every nonprofit should have one.

2. Have you seen mission accomplished photos–not just heart wrenching photos of sadness and abuse? A well run nonprofit will have success stories.
You should see photos of animals who have been adopted into permanent homes–not just foster homes. Placing animals into temporary foster homes is not a success story.

3. Can visitors make an appointment to meet the animals in person? A well run organization is always happy to have visitors, and media attention.

To sum up, a well run nonprofit will not be top heavy with most of the donations going to pay management. They will be transparent through their IRS 990. They will have verifiable success stories of their mission being accomplished.

And they will welcome visitors and media to their facilities!

“Leap of Faith” Fund

Most everyone knows that TROTT was founded on a ‘leap of faith’ in Dec. 2009. So it only seems appropriate to call this special appeal, the ‘Leap of Faith’ fund.

We have taken many, many horses who came with no sponsor or donation, because it’s very hard to turn down a horse who has nowhere else to go.

But we currently have about 25 horses, with 16 of them being ‘leap of faith’ horses. So here is another sweet guy who needs us. He has to be picked up this week, and we need to take him, but we just can’t afford to, unless we can secure a few ‘leap of faith’ sponsors.

Please share with all of your friends the $10 Leap of Faith Fund. This is just a one time $10 donation, and every dollar will be earmarked for the care of Majestic Diamond while he is being readied for adoption. You can make the donation on our website either by check or paypal. TrottUSA.org

We gratefully appreciate all of you who are able to share in giving Diamond a new future! His trainer says he has a puppy dog personality.

Thank you!

Megan and Cam:
Hi Bonnie!

Cam is starting his second full week of training and he is doing fabulous!  We have been working on canter transitions with him and he is picking up his right lead with ease now.  Such a quick learner.  I’m absolutely in love with him, he has the best temperament and personality!

Attached is a picture of him this morning in the jumper ring after a really good ride!

Megan and Cam

We just met the nicest man who saw our story on The Today Show last week.  He sent me pics of his beautiful ex-racehorse, Brooke Younge-Hopkins, that he adopted.  She is a lucky girl to have David, and TROTT is so
lucky to know him, as well.  He sent a very generous donation in the name of Brooke, and we are so very grateful!
Here is the lovely Brooke.

We are so appreciative to people like Taylor, who is asking for donations to TROTT in lieu of birthday presents this year.  Thank you so much Taylor!   We know you and Goer are a wonderful team!

My name is Taylor McCullough-Fries and I found out about your wonderful program through one of my idols, Mike Smith.  I am fifteen years old and have been riding for about seven years now. This past August my family and I bought a horse named Little Goer. He is an OTTB, and I could not have asked for a more faithful, loving companion!! After going through a pretty scary riding accident last year, I feared that I would never ride again. Goer’s patience and trust brought me back from those fears and have taught me to fall in love with horses all over again.

The reason I am contacting you is because I would like to make a donation to your charity. My birthday, which is May 7th, just happens to be the same day as the Kentucky Derby. Very exciting! I am planning to have a birthday/viewing party at my house and instead of my friends bringing gifts for me, I was going to ask that they bring a donation for Trott! Your charity is very close to my heart, not only because of my Goer but because of all of the amazing horses there are in the world. These guys and gals deserve a second chance and your organization is there to help them!

Thank you so much for your time!!  Taylor

Hello world!

Welcome to our community of horse lovers!   TROTT USA’s mission is to take horses straight from the track and train them for new careers.   We love the happy endings, and want everyone to share and update their horsey stories.  And we LOVE pics!  And updates on your adopted horse!!

If you love horses and want to help promote these talented athletes who have many happy years ahead of them, you have much to offer this community.

Those of us who were lucky enough to grow up with our own horse know the healthy lessons we learned, and we want to inspire others to share the beauty of  a relationship with their horse.

This blog is for sharing, and inspiring….your stories, photos, questions, advice, and more.
